Canberra, ACT – As Australians across the country celebrate International Cat Day on 8 August, Animal Medicines Australia (AMA) is highlighting the vital role animal health products play in helping pet owners enjoy long, loving relationships with their cats.
Cats are beloved members of more than 3.3 million Australian households¹, with 5.3 million cats providing companionship, comfort, and mental health benefits to their owners. According to AMA’s 2022 Pets in Australia survey, the top reasons for getting a cat were companionship (44%) followed by providing a home to a cat in need / adoption (32%), benefits to mental health (21%), relaxation (20%) or as a support animal (15%),
To ensure these cherished pets live their best lives, access to safe, effective, and innovative veterinary medicines is essential.
From routine vaccinations and parasite protection to treatments for chronic conditions, animal medicines help keep our feline friends healthy, active, and pain-free. These tools empower veterinarians and pet owners to work together in preventing disease, managing illness, and supporting lifelong wellbeing.
“Cats can be masters of hiding discomfort or illness, which is why preventative care and regular check-ups are so important,” said Ben Stapley, Executive Director of Animal Medicines Australia. “Thanks to advances in animal medicines, cat owners now have a wide range of tools at their fingertips to help their pets live longer, healthier, and more comfortable lives.”
Animal Medicines Australia encourages all cat owners to speak with their veterinarian about the best health care plan for their pets and to stay up to date with preventive treatments.
This International Cat Day, let’s celebrate the special bond we share with our feline companions – and the science that helps protect it.
