Canberra, ACT – Animal Medicines Australia joins the global community in recognising World Immunisation Week 2025 (24-30 April), highlighting the critical role that animal vaccines play in promoting health and wellbeing for people, animals and the environment.
The week reinforces the critical role vaccines play to protect lives and prevent disease across all sectors of society. As part of a One Health approach, animal immunisation is an essential tool in safeguarding not only animal health, but also public health and food security.
Executive Director of Animal Medicines Australia, Mr Ben Stapley, said that animal immunisation is a cornerstone of global health systems.
“Vaccinating animals – whether livestock, companion animals, or wildlife – protects their health and welfare and is vital in preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases to humans,” Mr Stapley said.
“As we’ve seen through recent global health events, human and animal health are inextricably linked. A One Health approach, which recognises the connections between people, animals and the environment, is key to building a more resilient and sustainable future.”
Animal vaccines prevent a wide range of serious diseases, improves animal welfare, reduces the need for antibiotics and contributes to more sustainable animal production systems.
Mr Stapley added, “Animal health professionals, veterinarians and farmers work every day to ensure our animals are protected through timely vaccination. Their work is fundamental to a safe and reliable food supply, to biosecurity, and to the wellbeing of animals in our care.”
Animal Medicines Australia encourages everyone to learn more about the importance of immunisation for both people and animals during World Immunisation Week, and to continue supporting science-based strategies that improve global health outcomes.
