Antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for pigs
AMA and its members are committed to the responsible, judicious and sustainable use of antimicrobials. These guidelines were developed by the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), Animal Medicines
Australia (AMA), the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources through the Australian
Biosecurity Response and Reform Program (ABRR), and by Australian Pork Limited (APL). AMA encourages applying these guidelines to ensure best practice antimicrobial prescribing in pig production.

Antimicrobial prescribing guidelines for pigs
One of the key objectives of any antimicrobial stewardship program is to reduce the use of antimicrobials. Eliminating the unnecessary use of antimicrobials is an essential part of this equation. While other objectives include ensuring appropriate prescribing practice (such as using the narrowest spectrum of antimicrobial activity and minimising the duration of use) and ensuring optimal infection prevention and control, the best way to secure the use of antimicrobials for the future and to reduce selection pressures favouring resistant organisms is to reduce the overall amounts used.
Every pig veterinarian should become familiar with these guidelines to deliver the best possible veterinary service to the Australian pig industry.
