Celebrating the Role of Animal Medicines this National Science Week
Canberra, ACT – This week (August 9–16) sees the nation celebrate National Science Week, an ideal time to reflect on the vital role science plays in supporting the health and wellbeing of Australia’s animals, people, and environment.
Animal Medicines Australia (AMA) proudly represents companies that invest heavily in research and development to bring safe, effective, and innovative veterinary medicines to market. Whether it’s a treatment to protect a beloved family pet or a vaccine that safeguards a herd of cattle from disease, every product undergoes rigorous scientific testing to ensure it meets the highest standards of safety, efficacy, and quality.
Science is the backbone of the animal medicines sector, and it’s essential that we have a regulatory framework grounded in science.
“Robust, evidence-based regulation not only builds public trust in animal health products, it also ensures that veterinarians, farmers, and pet owners have continued access to the latest innovations and the tools they need to care for animals and support Australia’s agricultural productivity and food security,” said Mr Ben Stapley, Executive Director of Animal Medicines Australia.
“AMA member companies are at the forefront of innovation, continually working to stay ahead of emerging threats – from new diseases to biosecurity risks, through to the responsible development of medicines that protect both our pets and our livestock,” concluded Mr Stapley.
But it’s not all about microscopes and stethoscopes. The animal health industry offers diverse and rewarding career pathways for people who study science. Beyond laboratory research, science graduates are in demand in regulatory affairs, policy development, quality assurance, clinical trial coordination, product stewardship, and innovation management. Others work in roles that connect science with industry and the community, such as technical advisory positions, biosecurity planning, and education.
This National Science Week, we acknowledge the scientists, regulators, policy makers, veterinarians, innovators, and industry professionals whose work ensures Australia remains a global leader in animal health.
By supporting science and maintaining strong regulatory standards, we are investing in the future of our animals, our industries, and our communities.
